Where Is Lambir National Park Located?

Nestled in the heart of Sarawak, Malaysia, Lambir Hills National Park is a vast expanse of natural beauty and ecological diversity. Spanning 6,949 hectares of hilly terrain, this national park is a haven for travelling nature enthusiasts. Just a 30-minute drive from Miri, it is easily accessible for a day trip or an extended adventure, making it one of the must-visit places in Miri, Sarawak.

What Time Is Lambir National Park Open

The park is open from 8AM to 4PM. I'm not sure if that is referring to the HQ hours or just the park in general.

Notes: the estimate time of arrival will depend on the weather conditions. Moreover, the time is based on a one way trip from HQ to the designated locations.

Animal Sightseeing

Adventurers can expect to have a chance encounter with animals such as pangolins, sun bears, bats, gibbons, and the White Rajah's birdwing butterfly — albeit with a low probability. The butterfly will probably be the highest rate, as the other animals have learned to stay clear from the hiking trails.

Hiking Recommendations For First Time Visitors

Latak Waterfall Hiking Trail

This waterfall is is the shortest and most popular trail to visit, which is ideal for day trippers coming from Miri. It's recommended to visit the area on the weekdays for those seeking solitude from the weekend crowd. This trail is the easiest to hike, as there aren't any steep hills.

Amenities offerred at Latak Waterfall

The area offers amenities including changing rooms, toilets, and picnic spots for visitors to relax and unwind. While swimming and water activities are permitted, caution is advised, especially in the deeper sections, which may pose risks for non-swimmers and children. There are safety buoys wrapped around waterfalls like Latak, so please do not swim into those sections.

Lambir Hiking Advice

If you are someone who is unathletic or out of shape, its advisable for you to only visit the first three nearest hiking trails (main trail, latak waterfall and pantu), as the third one (pantu) will probably exhaust you enough to make you call it a day — that’s because there’s steep stairs you have to climb.

Listen to your body, don’t push yourself unnecessarily unless your equipped for it. Trust me, I went to Bukit Pantu and by the time I had reached the top I had cramped the same leg twice — going down was just as every bit as worse, I had to take multiple breaks, a majority of which I found myself laying down on the forest floor due to the pain and exhaustion. I was contemplating just sleeping it out until I had recovered. In fact, one of my friends I went with actually did that, he was out for an hour due to the exhaustion.

With that in mind, its essential for you to carry light, have some salt pills on hand, some tonic drinks, and a litre of water or two. The majority of which I did not have during my journey in 2025.

On another note, if you are going together with your friends, do not fall into the idea you have enough water for everyone, because you most definitely won’t, so please tell them to bring their own water. I remember at the end of my trekking journey, I was extremely dehydrated due sharing my water and having very little left for myself.

Exiting Lambir Hills

If you decided to hike to the third trail (Pantu), you will encounter a 3 way crossroad sign, two to continue your journey to different trails, or to make your way back to the HQ, don’t bother trying to go back to HQ using the same route where you came from, as it’s a bit further away. Just follow the one newly discovered trail back to HQ — the one that leads to the inoue trail (Pink), as you exit you will find the accommodation sector of the HQ.

How Long it Took Me to Get Out

for reference I started from the main trail, went to latak waterfall, visited pantu waterfall, trekked again to the 3 point intersection, and went to Bukit Pantu. I started off my journey at 8am, and exited at 3pm. For more in shaped individuals, it shouldn’t take this long.
